Triethanolamine
Obtaining
Triethanolamine (nitrilotriethanol) manufactured by ethoxylation of ammonia.
Application
Triethanolamine is used for gas cleaning in obtaining pure carbon dioxide, in the textile and cement industry, in the manufacture of cosmetic products as raw material in a number of organic syntheses. Depending on the fractional composition triethanol is produced in grades A, B and C.
Safety requirements
Triethanolamine — fire hazard, the degree of impact on the body is a substance third risk class.
Packing
Triethanolamine is poured into clean dry steel drums; imported barrels meeting the strength characteristics of the national standards for similar containers; second hand drums meeting relevant regulatory requirements; rail and road tankers.
Guaranteed shelf life
3 years from date of manufacture.

Basic properties and hazards | |
Basic properties | Oily, viscous, hygroscopic, flammable liquid from yellow to dark brown with a specific amine odor. Infinitely miscible with water, soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and poorly in heptane. It has alkaline properties. The boiling point is 220 °C. Vapors are heavier than air and accumulate in low areas of the surface, basements, tunnels. Pollutes water. |
Explosion and fire | Flammable. Fire hazard. A flash point of 232 °C, at the temperature 395 °C |
The risk to humans | Owing to the low volatility, low vapor pressure and low toxicity in the working environment there is low danger. It is an irritant to skin and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and eyes. Cumulative properties are expressed moderately. It is harmful if inhaled, swallowed (nausea, headache, cough, drooling, eye pain, feeling of choking) Skin (tingling, itching), Eye (red). It penetrates intact skin leading to chemical burns. |
